KENYA Mukurweini AB

‘This lot is comprised from several small estate growers in the area of Mukurweini in Nyeri
County, working together under the name “Mukurweini Farmers”. The group consists of
around 20 smallholder farmers doing their own pulping, fermentation and drying, before
the lot is blended together as dried parchment at Kahawa Bora Millers in Thika, Kenya.
Located between the Aberdares Mountain Range and Mt Kenya, Mukurweini is a small area
delineated by four important rivers: Gikira to the West, Gura to the North, Mugono to the
South, and the biggest river – River Tana to the East (a major tributary of Kenya’s largest
river, the Tana River).Nyeri County shares its borders with five other counties, where Mukurweini is closest to the
neighbor to the South, Muranga. The name Nyeri is derived from the Masaai word nyiro,
meaning red, after the red volcanic soil in the area. The name was adapted by white settler
farmers to Nyeri. Most farmers today are growing tea and coffee as cash crops.’
